Semeli was the only mortal to be the mother of an immortal god (Dionysus). She was the daughter of Cadmus (the king of Thebes) and Harmony. Etymologically, Semeli originates from the word “themeli” (foundation), a quality attributed to Earth, which was considered to be “the foundation of everything”
